Quantity Discount Tiers That Don’t Erode Margin: PricingMag’s Calculation Guide

PricingMag.com is an independent trade publication covering Amazon B2B pricing, repricing, and pricing technology, built around decision guides rather than reviews. Quantity discounts only create value when the additional order economics remain acceptable.

Quantity Discount Tiers That Don't Erode Margin PricingMag's Calculation Guide

Model Each Discount Tier

Calculate contribution at each proposed quantity, including fees and fulfillment costs. A larger order does not automatically create savings; test whether the discount is paid for by genuine cost efficiencies or acceptable margin.

For a practical starting point, see PricingMag’s tiered discount calculator. The relevant decision is not simply whether the feature exists, but whether it addresses a real seller constraint.

Do Not Invent an Ideal Number of Tiers

More tiers may increase choice but also create complexity. Use actual order-size distribution and operational savings to decide whether additional breaks are useful.

What Sellers Should Measure Before Deciding

Record a representative set of listings, their acquisition costs, marketplace fees, fulfillment and shipping costs, recent order patterns, available inventory and the time spent making pricing decisions. Define the minimum acceptable contribution for each product. If these inputs are missing, gather them before changing rules or committing to a paid system.

Next, separate what the marketplace requires from what the business prefers. An eligibility condition is not the same as an editorial recommendation; a published platform average is not a forecast for one SKU. Test changes on a controlled group where possible, and compare outcomes over a meaningful period rather than reacting to one day of sales.

The Next Decision

Once each tier’s contribution checks out, the remaining question is how many discount tiers to set. Amazon allows up to five, but the right number depends on where your buyers’ order sizes actually cluster, not on filling every available slot.
