If you’re a seasoned futures trader, then you’ll want to look at the execution setup, the drawdown rules, and the payout access. Each of the firms (Topstep, Apex, MyFundedFutures, Take Profit Trader, Phidias, Elite Trader Funding, and Tradeify) is geared towards a different trading style. You’ve got Apex with their 20 account scaling, Elite Trader Funding with their six different evaluation models for different risk profiles etc.

7 Best Futures Prop Firms for Experienced Traders

What Is a Futures Prop Firm?

A futures prop firm will assess the trader, and if they’re successful, will give them access to a futures account (a firm account) with a set performance and risk profile. If you pass, you may be awarded a simulated funded account, which can in turn earn you profit sharing.

These programs commonly provide simulated access to CME futures such as the E-mini S&P 500, E-mini Nasdaq-100, crude oil, and gold contracts. You normally pay for an evaluation or direct-funded account instead of depositing the balance displayed on the trading platform.

As a trader, you are of course subject to the firm’s loss limits, position caps, trading hours, and payout rules. If you meet the criteria you can in fact get real money out even if the accounts are using simulated capital.

Most futures prop programs follow three stages:

Stage Main purpose Capital structure
Evaluation Tests whether the trader can meet a target without breaking the rules Simulated
Funded stage Allows eligible results to generate payouts Usually simulated
Live account Places trades through a brokerage connection using firm capital Live

The rules can vary as you progress through the stages. Different drawdown types may be used by the firms. A trailing threshold will increase as your account’s highest equity increases. An End-of-Day trailing drawdown will update the drawdown limit at the end of each session. An Intraday Trailing drawdown will track your highest real-time equity (including any unrealized gains). A Static drawdown will have a fixed drawdown limit. If your account falls below the drawdown limit/allowance (e.g. a $2k allowance on a $50k account), your account will be closed.

Payout rules, holding permissions and execution criteria can all be different at each stage. It’s therefore essential to look at the full account process rather than just the evaluation stage.

1. Topstep — Best for Structured Progression to Live Capital

Topstep starts with the Trading Combine, which is a simulated trade evaluation for CME futures traders. If you pass that you get an Express Funded Account (XFA). A Live Funded Account comes later in the process and is where Topstep provides the real money via their broker arrangement.

Topstep’s biggest advantage is the very clear account path which is obviously of benefit to the experienced trader. A lot of firms use the same type of stages, Topstep just separates out the evaluation, the simulated funding and the live trading so you know exactly where you are at each stage. For instance, when you go onto a Live Funded Account, your active XFAs are closed, so you’re just trading live.

Topstep’s Maximum Loss Limit is based on end-of-day results rather than on any intraday high. It works very well for order flow, discretionary and systematic traders whose positions can go in and out before the close. TopstepX is a single browser-based platform that brings execution, account objectives, and performance tracking all in one place.

  • Important limitation: Topstep decides when live progression occurs. Moving to a Live Funded Account closes the trader’s active XFAs and their progress, while the live account uses its own risk structure.
  • Platforms: TopstepX is the primary platform. Confirm that its order types, indicators, device support, and available contracts meet your execution requirements.

2. Apex Trader Funding — Best for Multi-Account and Copier-Based Scaling

Apex Trader Funding offers EOD and Intraday Trailing evaluations, with each evaluation type corresponding to a simulated Performance Account (PA) after the trader passes. Its principal advantage is account capacity: a trader may hold up to 20 active PAs across the current account types.

This is for the trader who wants to run the same strategy across multiple accounts. You can use an approved copier (NinjaTrader 8 or Replikanto) to automatically send orders so you don’t have to enter each trade individually. This is how you scale up, but you still have to manage risk on each account. Each PA is a separate entity with its own balance, its own drawdown, its own position limits, its own payout status and its own rules to monitor.

Apex have position limits in place to manage risk across all their Performance Accounts. They offer a 100% profit split (subject to payout caps and other requirements). They will review any qualifying Performance Account prior to inviting the trader onto live trading.

  • Important limitation: Each PA supports up to six approved payouts across its lifecycle, after which the account closes, and a trader can requalify through a new evaluation.
  • Platforms: Apex offers Tradovate, Rithmic, and WealthCharts connections. Compatible interfaces, data depth, and tradable products depend on the selected connection.

3. MyFundedFutures — Best for Plan-Based Strategy Flexibility

MyFundedFutures has a range of evaluation options available: Builder, Rapid, and Pro. All of the current evaluations use an EOD trailing Maximum Loss Limit. The plans are not interchangeable. The Builder plan has no consistency rule during the evaluation period, but does require 50% consistency in the funded phase. Standard Rapid and Pro have no consistency requirement. Standard Rapid uses EOD for the evaluation period and then switches to an Intraday Trailing drawdown once you’ve passed. So it’s not just a case of picking the right account size, it’s about picking the right plan.

There are also differences in the session-level risk controls. Builder has a soft daily loss limit, Pro and Rapid EOD don’t have one at all during the evaluation or in the simulated funding. If you’re a volatility trader, you may prefer a plan without a session limit for the intraday flexibility it gives you, but you do still need to ensure the payout rules are appropriate for your strategy.

  • Important limitation: Session-risk controls, position limits, and payouts vary by plan, such as the Standard Rapid plan.
  • Platforms: MFFU supports TradingView, Tradovate, NinjaTrader, Quantower, and other connections. Verify that the required instrument and feature are available through the chosen setup.

4. Take Profit Trader — Best for Early Payout Eligibility

Take Profit Trader commences with a periodic Test evaluation. If you pass that, you progress to a simulated PRO account. The evaluation utilises an EOD drawdown. In the PRO phase, the drawdown threshold becomes much more sensitive and tracks actual equity until it reaches the starting balance, at which point it then becomes fixed.

The main attraction of this firm is the speed of payout. PRO traders can withdraw as soon as they’ve built up their buffer (often on day one). That makes it very attractive to the experienced intraday trader who is going to be trading in and out of the session and wanting to get their money out on a regular basis. It’s not so much of an attraction for those who are going to be holding positions across multiple sessions or who are going to be letting large unrealized gains get pulled back before they close.

  • Important limitation: A PRO activation charge can apply unless a promotion provides an activation credit.
  • Platforms: Options include TradingView, NinjaTrader, Tradovate, Quantower, and several Rithmic-compatible platforms. Availability and included licensing depend on the data connection.

5. Phidias Propfirm — Best for Static Drawdown and Swing Trading

Phidias has a number of Futures account options for different requirements. Express to Live utilizes a Static drawdown. Fundamental uses an EOD trailing drawdown for intraday trading. Premium allows for overnight and weekend holding with an EOD drawdown.

A static route is ideal for the trader who wants a fixed loss limit. The profit can pull back without increasing the threshold, which is very much in keeping with wider stop mean-reversion strategies and systems that are prone to large swings in equity. The Premium plan allows you to hold positions for longer so is useful for multi-session trend, macro and swing strategies. The above features do introduce overnight/weekend gap risk so are only useful if you have a proven way of sizing your positions during the market close.

  • Important limitation: Express to Live, Fundamental, and Premium have different drawdown, holding, payout, and progression conditions. The firm cannot be assessed through one universal rule set.
  • Platforms: Tradovate, NinjaTrader, TradingView, Rithmic, and DeepCharts may be available, depending on the account and selected connection.

6. Elite Trader Funding — Best for Matching Accounts to Different Strategies

Elite Trader Funding has a number of account types available: One Step, Static, EOD, Diamond Hands, Fast Track and Direct to Funded.

Static and EOD accounts each have their own drawdown rules. One Step has a more responsive intraday trailing drawdown. Diamond Hands is for the overnight and weekend holding. Direct to Funded skips the evaluation altogether but requires a larger initial commitment.

With so many options available, you can match each strategy to the risk rules that are appropriate for the way it trades. A scalper, an intraday breakout model and a multi-day trend strategy are all going to have different drawdown and holding rules.

  • Important limitation: Activation charges, safety nets, payout audits, drawdown rules, and holding permissions differ widely across plans. Legacy documentation should not be applied to current accounts.
  • Platforms: Tradovate, NinjaTrader, and TradingView alongside RTrader, Bookmap, and other platforms with Rithmic connection.

7. Tradeify — Best for Faster and Direct Entry Routes

Tradeify has Growth and Select as well as Lightning (which provides direct access to a simulated funded account). All three of these products use EOD based drawdown rules, though they vary in their entry rules, reset rules, consistency and payout terms.

Growth is the faster of the two evaluation options. Select requires a multi-day evaluation and gives you the option to pick your funded stage payout policy. Lightning bypasses the evaluation entirely but does so at a higher cost and with much more stringent consistency requirements once you’re live.

These might be the options you go for if you’re looking to spend less time on proving your strategy. You should still bear in mind the withdrawal rules though. Getting into a funded account quicker doesn’t necessarily mean you can get your profits out sooner.

  • Important limitation: Growth, Select, and Lightning have different consistency, reset, payout, and progression rules. Faster entry does not guarantee simpler payouts.
  • Platforms: Tradovate, Rithmic, and WealthCharts connections can support interfaces such as NinjaTrader, TradingView, Quantower, and Sierra Chart, depending on the setup.

Conclusion

A seasoned trader would pick a futures prop firm by ensuring that the full account structure of the firm matches the strategy they’ve already backtested. A large simulated balance, a quick assessment period or a generous profit share are all of no use if the actual funded account has a large drawdown, different payout terms, holding limits etc. that prevent you from trading in the way you normally would.

Before purchasing, complete this checklist:

  1. Confirm that open profit moves the drawdown.
  2. Compare the evaluation rules with the funded stage rules.
  3. Review contract scaling once we’ve passed.
  4. Check the copier and automation permissions.
  5. Confirm the overnight, weekend and news trading rules.
  6. Calculate the balance required for a payout.
  7. Verify the platform, the data feed and the instrument is available.

Live progression is all over the place. Some companies have a very clear progression path, others will decide when they’re ready to move the trader on.

Risk Disclosure: Futures prop-firm programs involve fees and may close accounts after rule breaches. Passing does not guarantee payouts or progression to live trading.
